Mikhaila Weister had a dream of establishing a chiropractic practice in her hometown of Appleton. But onerous state requirements kept her from securing a license. The Badger Institute championed her cause in Madison, and state licensing requirements were reformed. Now a team of health professionals provide a wide range of services out of Weister’s wellness studio.
Albert Walker is an experienced barber who was prevented by an absurd Wisconsin law from opening his own business. The Badger Institute shared his story with policymakers, and the law was changed. Walker now operates a thriving barber lounge in Green Bay.
One-third of men coming out of Wisconsin’s corrections system will likely return to prison. When the Badger Institute highlighted successful reentry models around the country, local organizations took action. Partners in Hope (PIH), a Milwaukee program that brings together former prisoners and volunteers from law enforcement, was created to provide returning citizens with employment and mentoring to help them succeed. The recidivism rate for those who complete the program is 4.2%.
“It’s organizations like the Badger Institute that promote American values, the things that make America great,” says U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson. “First and foremost, personal liberty. Recognition that it’s free markets where free individuals can aspire and dream and build and create.”
We work every day to advance free-market ideas, small and responsive government, civil society solutions and individual aspiration because we want people like Albert, Mikhaila and every other Wisconsinite to have shot at the American dream.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your help. And thanks to a generous donor, every new or increased donation through Nov. 14 will be matched!
“I hope every conservative realizes that it’s useful and impactful to back the Badger Institute in its vital work,” says Karl Rove. “It plays a vital role in shaping the future of your state and our country.”
Please join us in our efforts to produce the research and tell the stories that lead to reform and allow Wisconsinites to prosper. We’re getting close to our $100,000 goal. Will you help us get across the finish line?
