OK, China: Yesterday (11/11) was your Singles Day. We appreciate you giving us single people a special day. But the day’s purpose is a little sketch: so singles can “treat themselves to nice dinners and splurge on goods they wouldn’t otherwise buy for themselves”? In fact, Singles Day is now the most lucrative online shopping day in the world, last year grossing over $38 billion in sales. Um, I’m not into it. I say we single adults repurpose this holiday into something less selfish (and expensive). Luke 6:38 has a good place to start: “...give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Generosity is always worth celebrating.
