Demand Truth in Turkey Labeling
Dear John,
Each year, millions of turkeys are raised and slaughtered for Thanksgiving. Many people try to support higher-welfare farming by selecting "free range" or "pasture raised" turkeys. Unfortunately, the US Department of Agriculture does not adequately regulate label claims, so producers can make the claims on product packaging despite providing neither range nor pasture for the turkeys. As a result, consumers are tricked into choosing products that are not actually from higher-welfare farms and do not align with their values.
TAKE ACTION ([link removed])
What You Can Do
This Thanksgiving, tell the USDA ([link removed]) to protect consumers from misleading claims found on turkey and chicken products. Write Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and tell him the department should ensure that food labels such as "free range" and "pasture raised" mean what they say.
Please share our "Dear Humanitarian" eAlert with family, friends, and co-workers, and encourage them to contact Secretary Perdue as well. As always, thank you very much for your help!
Sincerely,
Cathy Liss
President
