After four years of fighting on
defense, we the people just shattered turnout records and elected new
leaders up and down the ballot.
Despite the pandemic, active voter
suppression tactics, and billions of dollars spent by dark real estate
money to fight our agenda, we just elected an incredible slate of
racial and economic justice champions across the state of
California!
Of the dozens of candidates ACCE endorsed, THE VAST
MAJORITY OF THEM HAVE WON! ACCE Action’s endorsement process prioritized candidates who
support rent control and have vowed to never take money from big real
estate or corporate landlords - and with a legislature dominated by toxic real estate money -
this is a BIG DEAL.
Racial and economic justice doesn’t just happen in
“movement moments” of protest or at the ballot box - it happens during
the year-round ground up organizing led by people of color across the
state to transform society and each other. As
we’re gaining momentum coming out of this election, now is the time to
invest in a racial and economic justice vision for the long haul.

In Alameda County,
we elected our very own fierce and amazing ACCE Oakland Director
Carroll Fife to Oakland City Council and removed an entrenched
anti-tenant candidate who has been seated for years. In Berkeley,
despite over a hundred thousand dollars spent by national real estate
groups, we elected the “Right to Housing” slate of candidates for Rent
Board - including ACCE’s very own Legal Director Leah
Simon Weisberg, and our Black Housing Union Organizer Dominique
Walker.
In Contra Costa County, we have taken over Richmond City Council! Despite big money
from Chevron and the cops, all of our progressive candidates won -
Claudia Jimenez, Gayle McLaughlin and ACCE Organizer
Melvin Willis. We helped
elect Taylor Simms to Pittsburg Unified School District, Tamisha
Walker to Antioch City Council, and ACCE Member Eduardo
Torres to Bay Point Ambrose Recreation and Park District
Board!
In Los Angeles County, we helped elect Holly Mitchell to LA County Board of
Supervisors - who will join an all female majority progressive board.
We helped unseat a highly problematic District Attorney, Jackie Lacey,
and replaced her with George Gascón! Education justice champion Scott
Schmerelson was elected to LA Unified School District Board! And in
Downey, ACCE Member Catherine Alvarez was elected to City Council!
In San Diego County, we have seen some outstanding victories - for the first time
ever, we have elected a progressive majority to the San Diego County
Board of Supervisors! Two incredible women, Nora Vargas and Terra
Lawson-Remer, have both been elected and we look forward to moving
real progressive legislation with them. And in National City and Chula
Vista, we are close to confirming Marcus Bush, Jose Rodriguez and
Andrea Cardenas - all strong supporters of our housing justice
platform.
In Sacramento,
earlier this year we elected a member of the “Sacramento Squad,” Katie
Valenzuela, and are on our way to electing Mai Vang, both critical
wins as we work to build a progressive city council that will fight
for affordable housing, economic inclusion, workers rights, and a
strong social safety net!
And at the state level, we helped re-elect David Chiu - one of the strongest tenant
advocates in the legislature - and added to the tenant caucus with the election of newcomer
Alex Lee.
This election has been a
rollercoaster, and while we are elated by our local victories across
the state, we are sober about the work ahead of us. We need your help
to build a government that prioritizes racial and economic justice. We
need your help to succeed in reallocating the trillions of dollars
that have been hoarded by the wealthy few during the course of this
pandemic. We need your help to win a just recovery that prioritizes
the wellbeing and security of renters, essential workers and
communities of color. People like you- people with a commitment to
building a future that takes care of all of us - are throwing down and
investing in this work for the long haul. Commit
to racial and economic justice by becoming a sustaining member of ACCE
today.
Together, we will build the future
we dream of.
In solidarity,
Sasha
