First of all, everyone reading this email, thank you for your time, your donations, and your tireless support. Without you, none of the last three and a half years would have been possible. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

The last three years, I’ve had the greatest honor of my life, representing the great state of Alabama in the United States Senate, following in the footsteps of my former boss, Howell Heflin.

This race didn’t turn out the way we wanted. But what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last three and a half years will have a lasting impact on the people of Alabama and our country as a whole – we made progress together. And, now that the dust is settling, I am filled with hope knowing that we will all continue down this path forward, united, under the Biden-Harris administration.

What we’ve done here has always been about more than just one Senate race. It’s never been just about me or the Jones family. This has always been about a state that has gone through massive changes over the years, and we are in the process of going through those again.

We’ve seen so many positive changes over the last few years, but at the end of the day, Alabama is still a work in progress. We know that. Alabama still ranks low in education. We still rank high in unhealthy outcomes.

Those are the issues that you’ve been working on with me for the last three years. And for that, everybody in Alabama ought to be appreciative. I know I am. I know that there are folks in Washington, DC who are. But there’s still work to do, and we’re not going to stop.

When we came out with One Alabama as our campaign slogan, we meant it. We are all in this together. We are doing everything we can to lift all voices. To make sure that every man, woman, and child in Alabama has an equal opportunity, to make sure that they’re treated equally with dignity and respect, to make sure they have the opportunities for a job and a better education. Those are the things that we’ve been working on and those are the things that we’re going to continue to build.

At the end of the day, my time in the Senate is going to be over. But our time is just beginning. Our time to make our state so much better, to make sure that we continue this march of progress, because at the end of the day, that’s where we are – on a march of progress.

And I know this: I know that we’re going to be fine. I know you’re going to be fine. Because I have seen so many people, from so many walks of life, join in this fight for progress over the last three years. So many people who didn’t even vote for me have contributed to make this place better. We’ve seen that there really is more that unites us than divides us, and I know that when we are united towards progress, we’re unstoppable.

John Lewis would always quote the old African proverb, “When you pray, move your feet,” and I used to quote that as a way of trying to get people out and work. But what John went on to say, what he really meant, was something different. He went on to say that as a nation, “if we care for the Beloved Community, we must move our feet, our hands, our hearts, our resources, to build and not tear down, to reconcile and not to divide, to love and not to hate, to heal and not to kill. In the final analysis, we are one people, one family, one house, the American house, the American family.” Folks, for the last 3 years we’ve been the Alabama family, we’ve been the Alabama house. And John’s words are as important now, and maybe more important than they were when he said them a number of years ago.

Everybody has said, “You know, Doug, how do you navigate this issue? How do you navigate that issue in Alabama?” And we’ve never been concerned about that. We’ve followed our principles. We’ve always been true to our principles. And I believe that one day, with the changes that we’ve made, we’re going to be proven right on a lot of things, folks. Because we are still a work in progress.

I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished. We love you. We appreciate you. The state of Alabama appreciates all that you’ve given, to us and back to this state.

Thank you, friend. Thank you for being a part of this team. Thank you for believing in me and for believing in what we did here.
