Dear
John,
The University Bookman, along with Cluny Media, The New Criterion, and First Things, is very pleased to announce a virtual discussion with Stephen Schmalhofer about his new book Delightful People on December 9. Those familiar with Schmalhofer’s essays cannot wait for his next one, and this collection is a real treat. As he writes, “Each of us knows a delightful person whose presence is effervescence at any party. In this little book, I hope to introduce you to several delightful people.”

With style, humor, and learning, Schmalhofer introduces us to writers, artists, and society figures worth knowing.
His subjects include Mr. and Mrs. Winthrop Chanler, novelists Willa Cather, Francis Marion Crawford, and Henry James, artist John La Farge and art collector Egisto Fabbri, as well as the irrepressible Father Cyril Sigourney Fay, whose many friends included Pope Benedict XV and F. Scott Fitzgerald. With these essays, Schmalhofer continues the life of letters into an era deluged with “hot takes.”
