Georgia Senate run-off candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff

While not as many states flipped GOP Senate seats like we did here in Colorado, the contest for the majority in the U.S. Senate isn't over! Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are headed to January 5, 2021 run-off elections!

How did we get here?

Thanks to the tireless work of organizations across the state of Georgia (with special thanks to Stacey Abram's Fair Fight organization) Georgia went blue for the first time in decades, with Joe Biden leading Donald Trump by more than 12,000 votes as of yesterday! In Georgia, if you're running for a state or Congressional office, you must win a clear majority of 50%+ -- otherwise you go to a second, or "runoff" election.

In the case of these two Senate seats, Democrat Jon Ossoff is running against incumbent GOP senator David Perdue. For the other seat, the Reverend Raphael Warnock ran against appointed GOP senator Kelly Loeffler in a special election after the previous incumbent resigned in December 2019.

None of these four gained 50% of the vote in their respective races. Currently, Dems have 48 seats in the Senate. If they elect Warnock and Ossoff, that gives them 50 seats, and with Vice President Kamala Harris being the tie breaker, that gives Dems the majority in the Senate!

How can we help make that happen??

It's all hands on deck, and the entire country will be watching Georgia! Here's two immediate ways you can get involved to help Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff win!

  • Call Georgia Voters Virtual Phone Bank (Hosted by Warnock for Georgia)
  • Run Your Ossoff Daily Phone Banks (Hosted by Jon Ossoff for Senate)

Whoever wins these two seats could determine the course of Joe Biden's presidency. If the GOP wins, Mitch McConnell keeps his majority, and he'll have the power he needs to obstruct every policy idea Dems want to pass.

But, if Dems win these seats in Georgia? Legislation like a health care public option, voting rights protections, combating climate change, raising the minimum wage to $15, and so much more are possible!

But we have to win these two seats. What do you say?

Volunteer(s) of the Week

Colorado going blue would not have been possible without the many, MANY volunteers who showed up day after day to do the work. Over the next few weeks, we'll be recognizing some of those exemplary volunteers!

Image

As you all saw, we had a robust and active Voter Protection Hotline that ensured that every eligible Coloradan had their right to vote protected! We want to thank these wonderful volunteers and every volunteer who put in the time to train, poll watch, staff the legal boiler room and who went through the training and provided guidance to voters all across Colorado!

Special thanks to:

  • Julie Kent
  • JJ Levy
  • Saul Hopper
  • Ada Chen
  • Megan Greising
  • Sarah Inderbitzen
  • Jamen Tyler

In CDP's new Colorado VAN user group, veterans & novices helped each other master a powerful but cranky tool to maximize GOTV. Tough questions were answered and best practices shared. Together, we contacted over two million Colorado voters and helped drive a record turnout of 85% of active voters.

Colorado is very fortunate to have these three particular volunteers who went out of their way to help all of us:

  • Jennifer Fillipowski, Eagle County
  • Jerome Dayton, Garfield County
  • Gary Koenig, Broomfield County

In 2017, CDP volunteers Wayne and Elaine Flournoy created the Precinct Organizers Colorado Dems Facebook Group. The Flournoys reached out to thousands of PO's and developed a friendly and safe place for PO's to share tips and best practices. Many thanks to Elaine and Wayne for creating this valuable resource.

Finally, our thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who direct tech support for VAN. Without their dedication and hard work, we never would have achieved our record 84%+ turnout!

Help Us Thank Our Staff!

I can’t tell you how proud I am of our team here at the Colorado Democratic Party. They make up a small, but forceful team. They have been working non-stop, around the clock, even years and odd years to get us here. And trust me, they wouldn’t want it any other way. Change takes work, and that’s why they give so much of their time, and really their lives, to turning Colorado blue.

I ask so much of them because our democracy is in the balance, and they always deliver even if it means sacrificing those moments in life that only come around so often. Weekends, holidays, you name it—they’ve been working.

Their hard work -- while not always noticed or recognized publicly -- paid off.  Colorado made history this election and broke our own turnout records and was a stand-out state in the country delivering early, decisive wins for Biden-Harris and Hickenlooper. We flipped the CU Board of Regents, grew our historic legislative majority, and partnered to flip local seats.

The state party is here to organize year round and to the work needed to win elections and deliver good public policy for Colorado.  Everything we raise off of this email will go to our staff as a thank you (win) bonus.

Will you help me thank our small staff with the win bonuses they deserve?
