Health Justice Highlights

Hi

As the summer comes to a close, Health Poverty Action is working hard as ever to support communities fighting for their right to live a healthy and fulfilled life! On International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we were delighted to be published [[link removed]] in Open Democracy bringing attention to the issue of indigenous mental health and the struggles against the effects of colonialism still felt by indigenous communities today.

On the ground, Michael Pitt, our new Laos Country Director, is currently accompanying a team from ECHO [[link removed]] to visit flooded districts in Khammouane Province, which we are currently working in through our “Partnership for Improved Nutrition in Lao PDR” project funded by the European Commission. Health Poverty Action is part of a cluster of organisations which can be called upon by the government to respond (as we did in response to the Attapeu dam disaster in 2018). This year, the government has yet to call for additional support however we are monitoring the situation in affected areas closely, collaborating with local government partners and communities.

Are you a bit of a Foodie?

Join us for our Eat with Me charity event at 6.30pm on Tuesday 22nd October in central London. Hosted by well-known chefs, guests will be treated to special cooking demonstrations and an opportunity to taste new dishes (from Pakistan, India and Thailand), whilst meeting and talking to the chefs behind the inspiration.

All food and drink is included in the ticket price, as well as a goodie bag!

100% of proceeds raised on the night will be donated to charity.

Join us at the Labour Party Conference!

We are very excited to be in Brighton this year with events at both the Labour Party Conference and The World Transformed. The conferences will take place this weekend from 21st to 25th September in Brighton, where we will be running a number of brilliant events along with our partners, hearing from inspiring speakers and activists from across the world.

A Labour [[link removed]] government could reportedly consider legalising [[link removed]] all drugs if it was recommended by a Royal Commission. “There is nothing more important than preserving the life of our citizens," Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, told The Sunday Times. "Our current approach to drugs is simply not doing that." However, Health Poverty Action believes Labour should both act now and go further. Decriminalisation should go hand in hand with the legal regulation of drugs. Done properly, legal regulation means we can implement public health measures to make drugs safer as well as protect those who are currently marginalised by the failed ‘war on drugs’.
