** Foster comments on Tyrone GAA video
------------------------------------------------------------
Last Saturday night during a band parade in Aughnacloy, a bus carrying Tyrone GAA players sang along to 'Come out ye black and tans' and shouted derogatory, sectarian remarks aimed at those involved in the parade.

DUP Leader and Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Arlene Foster said,

“The bands were unaware of the singing or the comments until this video appeared.

It was their annual parade. There are many children in the bands. The parade is about the music and performance in front of their neighbours. It is not about offending anyone.

The singing and the particular offensive remark does not represent many people who support GAA. I hope Tyrone GAA deal with this in a sensible way and we all move on.

The Aughnacloy parade is an example of sharing where they don’t start the parade until the Saturday evening mass is over. There must be respect on all sides if we are to build a shared future.”

** DUP MEP meets Ursula von der Leyen
------------------------------------------------------------

DUP MEP for Northern Ireland Diane Dodds has had discussions with Ursula von der Leyen during a meeting of the Conference of Presidents in the European Parliament.

The incoming European Commission Chief has been holding a series of meetings prior to the ratification vote on her position in next weeks plenary in Strasbourg. In these exchanges she told the next UK Prime Minister to be mindful of their "tone and attitude" regarding Brexit. She then went on to urge the UK to not leave the EU.

Mrs Dodds said,

“The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in the ultimate electoral act of my lifetime.

For Mrs von der Leven to urge the next Prime Minister to ignore the will of the people is exactly the reason why people voted to leave.

The EU hierarchy is aloof and cavalier with the electorate. Ursula von der Leyen is not even in position and is already dismissing the democratic wishes of 17.4 million people”

Mrs Dodds urged the Commissioner designate to use the transition period from now to October 31st to work on securing the right deal for the EU 27 and United Kingdom so that both can prosper and work closely together.

“While Mrs von der Leyen will not formally come into office until the end of October she can use her time in the transition period to ensure that we have a deal that benefits all of our people. Then she can concentrate on the new relationship between the EU and the UK.

The signs are not encouraging. So far she has stuck to the old EU intransigence of total support for the draft withdrawal agreement. An agreement that does not have the support of the Unionist community in Northern Ireland and which will see barriers erected within the United Kingdom’s internal market. She mirrors the intransigence and obstinacy of Dublin. Support for the European project is clearly more important than support for democracy and economic prosperity.

The incoming Commission chief must take some of her own advice. Rather than lecture the UK Government about tone and attitude she should do some soul-searching of her own.

The reason why we are facing a ‘no deal’ exit is because of the arrogant approach in Dublin and Brussels

A balanced way forward can be found but it will require pragmatism in Brussels rather than highhanded lectures.”

** Coveney comments demonstrate hard border threats were EU negotiating tactic
------------------------------------------------------------
DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds MP has said the comments from Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney demonstrate that threats of a hard border were only ever an EU negotiating tactic.

Responding to comments that inspections for livestock and agri-food products would take place away from the border Mr Dodds said,

“For several years a so-called hard border has been held up as inevitable should the UK leave the European Union without a deal. Indeed, as recently as January, the EU’s chief spokesperson said it was “obvious” there would be a hard border.

Such threats have only ever been a negotiating tactic, not least because a so-called hard border was impossible to create with twenty thousand soldiers based in Northern Ireland during the troubles. Simon Coveney’s comments are a final acceptance of this fact. It is a shame however that the charade was carried on for so long when sensible and practical steps could have been developed.

Mr Coveney should reflect however that should there be a no-deal exit then the Irish Government will have been the primary architect of that outcome. Their stubborn demand to include an unnecessary, unworkable and unacceptable backstop is why the Withdrawal Agreement was so soundly defeated by Parliament.

That stubborn insistence on the backstop comes even as Mr Coveney’s own government predicts it could cost 55,000 jobs and €6.5bn to the Republic of Ireland’s finances. A way forward does exist however and that is to agree a no tariff regime and then we can move forward with forming a new relationship.

The choice remains for the Irish Government whether they want to stick to a dogmatic position or work sensibly and practically to achieve an outcome that works for everyone.”

** Cameron backs calls for Autism training for teachers
------------------------------------------------------------
South Antrim DUP MLA Pam Cameron has welcomed a campaign by Autism NI calling for all teachers to receive mandatory training in how best to meet the needs of pupils with autism.

Pam Cameron said:

“With around 1 in 30 children in Northern Ireland now living with autism it is vitally important that teachers are trained in how best to ensure they can help children with autism reach their potential.

School can be a daunting experience for any child and key to settling in school is building relationships with teachers and fellow pupils and ensuring the environment is conducive to learning. It is key in all of this that the teacher has the necessary understanding and methods to ensure every child enjoys their school years and gains as much from them as possible, both in terms of education but also socially.

I welcome this campaign and would encourage the Department to make this change. I know from speaking to teachers that, despite the pressures they are under, they would really value this training. Now is the time for the Department to meet this need.”
