Americans for Peace Now: November 11, 2020

"I will never abandon the two-state solution because it’s the only solution... I am not doing the Israelis a favor by saying that. I am doing myself a favor."

Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the PLO, and the former chief Palestinian negotiator in peace talks with Israel, during an APN webinar in May. Dr. Erekat passed away on Tuesday. READ MORE

Synergy: lame-duck Trump, indicted Netanyahu (November 9, 2020)

Q. The coming two and a half months of President Trump’s lame-duck term coincide with the countdown to the opening of PM Netanyahu’s trial in January 2021. As close political associates facing adversity, how might they interact?

A. They can collaborate to improve on their Middle East legacies. Then again, they can collaborate to leave a more destructive set of legacies...

Q. What can Trump and Netanyahu do in the course of around 70 days regarding their Middle East legacy?

A. Netanyahu and, surprisingly, his rival and ‘alternate prime minister’ Gantz, sent an interesting signal in this regard...

Q. And without Gantz’s blessing but with Trump’s, what could Netanyahu do on other fronts in the weeks ahead?

A. Netanyahu is looking for initiatives that could help him launch and win yet another election...

Q. Nothing by way of a more positive Trump-Netanyahu legacy?

A. Definitely also possible. But problematic, too...

Q. Conceivably Trump will now adopt a scorched earth policy of firing senior officials like the heads of US intelligence and security agencies, some of whom he seems to have never trusted . . .

A. This implies a temporary breakdown of sorts in Washington’s strategic ties with countries like Israel...

Q. And if Trump defiantly refuses to officially resign and declares his candidacy for president in 2024? What will he expect from political allies like Netanyahu?

A. This could be the ultimate quandary for Netanyahu....

Q. Bottom line?

A. It is doubtful that Netanyahu’s political calculations vis-à-vis the United States range beyond the next four years...

APN Congratulates President-Elect Biden, VP-Elect Harris

APN congratulates Joseph Biden on his election as the 46th President of the United States, and Kamala Harris, our nation's next Vice President, and wishes them success in their pursuit of a more just and responsible foreign policy.

President-Elect Biden has the experience and has earned the trust of both Israelis and Palestinians – and, indeed, of prominent leaders worldwide. He should take advantage of the renewed trust in American global leadership that his election provides and use this historic opportunity to push for Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Peace Now: Four Years of Trump Enabled West Bank Settlement Construction and Boosted Annexation

A new Peace Now report details the surge in settlement construction and planning during the four year term of President Trump. This unprecedented departure from decades-long US policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has made the two-state solution more difficult to attain, and has significantly complicated the efforts of future U.S. administrations to help broker peace between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors.

In The News

In Memoriam

This week, we recognized the passing of Saeb Erekat, the former chief Palestinian negotiator for the peace talks with Israel. Dr. Erekat was a friend of Americans for Peace Now and a fellow staunch supporter of our mission.

Our community lost several other supporters and icons this week. We were saddened by the passing of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, who died on Saturday of cancer. He was a voice of reason and moderation, and a strident supporter of Israeli-Palestinian peace. We also lost APN supporter and JACPAC founder, Linda Sher. Last but not least, we lost Israeli poet Nathen Zach, whose work, albeit apolitical, is a brilliant part of Israel’s modern cultural tapestry.

This is a tough time for all of us, and the demands placed upon you are considerable. As APN’s financial obligations continue, including, among others, our support of our Peace Now colleagues in Israel, please consider making a donation now. Thank you.
