As we mark Veterans Day this year, and remember those who have served our nation with valor to uphold the ideals and freedoms we all hold so dear, let us remember why they served.

During my time in the U.S. Army, I learned how deeply my fellow soldiers believe in our nation and its values, including the freedom to express oneself openly without fear of oppression or reprisal. It is the bedrock upon which our nation has been built—that ideal is the common bond that all who served seem to have. In my own personal experience, among all of the military members I encountered along the way, the rights laid out in the First Amendment were a widely and deeply held motivator.

It is those values and rights we still strive to fully realize in our nation today.

Through our lobbying work, the Secular Coalition for America is committed to fighting for the equal access to support and equal respect for the service of nontheists in the U.S. armed forces. Together with one of nineteen amazing member organizations, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) we continue to advocate against nontheist erasure, religious coercion, and exclusionary chaplaincy practices within the branches of the military. Additionally, I would like to relay the words shared with me today from the MAAF President, Jason Torpy, that I think are really worth remembering today.

"Peace is a value we should all share. This veterans day, listen to those who have fought for peace. Honor them as they advocate for peace as a first best option, war as a last resort, and the opportunity for a greater America in the future."

It truly is an honor to be a part of a movement that is home to many veterans. Let us honor them all today. To my fellow nontheist veterans out there, thank you for your service and know that we continue to serve you as you have served us.
