National lockdown from Thursday 5 November

Our NHS and vulnerable communities need us to keep following the rules

**A message from City Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Sally Longford:**

sally longford

Yesterday I chaired the bi-weekly Outbreak Control Engagement Board, which has an oversight of the local picture in relation to Covid-19 and the plans in place to prevent and manage outbreaks. We discussed the local rates of infection, local enforcement plans to ensure business and individual compliance, how to further support groups at risk such as the elderly and the homeless and the potential of the Governments new testing programme.

Cases of Covid-19 have been falling in Nottingham. People have been following the hands/face/space guidance and weve worked hard as a city to stick to the restrictions set out in Tier 2 and 3 and now as part of the national lockdown. This is good news and I thank everyone who is abiding by the rules and doing their bit to tackle the pandemic locally. The virus is still very prevalent in the city though and our NHS and vulnerable communities need us to keep following the rules.

We continue to help the Clinically Extremely Vulnerable through targeted correspondence and information [ [link removed] ] and community-focussed support and we have developed a strong partnership across the city and county to support rough sleepers, to ensure that services are joined up and meeting the needs of the individual.

Nottingham has been approached to be included in the new testing programme for Covid-19 that is being rolled out across the country. We are waiting for more information from the Government and will work with partners in the city to understand how we could use this to benefit our communities. We will look at how best we could incorporate this additional testing as part of our citys ongoing response to Covid-19.

The Outbreak Control Engagement Board is a public meeting and is live-streamed on the councils You Tube channel. You can watch live or catch up later - the next board will be Tuesday 24th November at 2pm.

*Celebrating our fantastic City Council workers*

During this national crisis, councils up and down the country have provided crucial local leadership and continued delivering local services that have been absolutely essential to the Covid-19 response protecting lives and livelihoods, and keeping our communities running. Yesterday, the Local Government Associations #CouncilsCan campaign highlighted and celebrated the work that local council workers provide day in, day out to their local residents and businesses. I would like to add my thanks and appreciation for dedicated Nottingham City Council workers continuing to serve our communities and deliver the services people value, even in these most difficult circumstances. You can see a selection of videos in the latest Arrow magazine here [ [link removed] ] where some of our devoted key workers talk about why they do what they do.

*New city initiative matches skills and training to changing local business needs*

Im pleased that the councils Job Services and our D2N2 Growth Hub partners are leading a new three-year project to create bespoke skills training and development programmes for local businesses, their current employees and people looking for work. The D2N2 Skills Access Hub will unlock the potential for sustainable growth and economic prosperity at a time when increasing numbers of people are unemployed, and those who own or work for local small and medium-sized businesses are struggling. Its aim is to match the real-world needs of local businesses with the skills and training of existing and prospective employees. Click here [ [link removed] ] for more information.

*Armistice Day 2020*

And finally although many of us stayed at home today across the city and indeed the country, many of us stopped what we were doing at 11am and took part in two minutes of silence to pay our respects to those who have lost their lives in war. Tonight the Council House will be lit up red to honour the bravery of the men and women who have fought for our country. I would like to express my gratitude to our events team and partners including the County Council and Royal British Legion for enabling events to go ahead to mark the occasion this year albeit in a very different way to usual.
