Friend,
Enough is enough. It's been more than 200 days since the House passed universal background check legislation. In that time, we've seen -- like clockwork -- more tragedies and more senseless violence. Including recently in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio -- where 31 people were killed.
And every single one of those 200 plus days, as more American lives are lost, Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring this life-saving legislation to a vote.
Action must be taken now -- before more families and communities are destroyed by gun violence. We can't let McConnell and Trump continue to bow to the gun lobby. We can't let them continue to play political games at the expense of the American people.
Please, will you join me in demanding McConnell serve the American people -- not the gun lobby -- and immediately bring this lifesaving legislation to a floor vote in the Senate?
My Democratic colleagues and I are putting forward substantial proposals and legislation to address the gun violence epidemic -- head on. Strengthening background check laws is one of them, and I am confident that it will help prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands in the first place, stopping more senseless tragedies.
It's common-sense, bipartisan legislation. It's popular even with Republicans and gun owners. A whopping 93% of Americans support universal background checks. And it would save lives.
But still, McConnell refuses to take much-needed action. It's unconscionable. We can't let this be our status quo.
To prevent more needless loss of life, our only option is to urge -- shame, even -- Senator McConnell into doing what's necessary to protect the American people.
I hope you'll join me in sending a strong message to McConnell in support of common-sense gun reform legislation. Click here to add your name and demand that Mitch McConnell immediately bring this legislation to a vote.
Enough is enough. Thank you for raising your voice with me on this issue.
Sincerely,
Chuck Schumer
