John,
The Senate just held a confirmation hearing for an FCC commissioner who is EVEN WORSE THAN AJIT PAI.1
Yes, you read that right. In spite of the election results, the Senate Commerce Committee appears to be moving ahead with the nomination of Nathan Simington, a telecom lawyer who literally helped draft the administration’s “Censor the Internet” executive order.2
In the last question of the hearing he confirmed that he supports Ajit Pai’s repeal of net neutrality. But he wants to go even further than that by making the FCC the Internet speech police. We can’t let that happen.
It’s ridiculous that the Senate is even considering this. Simington has almost no experience beyond his love for attacking Internet freedom. And he’s backed by the same exact companies who spent millions lobbying to kill net neutrality.
We’ve launched a new phone call tool and are pounding the pavement demanding the real changes we need at the FCC. The Senate should reject Simington outright. Ajit Pai should step down and fade into obscurity as a cautionary Internet meme. And the incoming administration should appoint a new chairperson who will immediately restore net neutrality and oppose attacks on the First Amendment.
Net neutrality and Internet freedom should not be partisan issues. We know we need to fight hard to make sure that an incoming administration does not continue the “revolving door” policies of the past.
We don’t need any more telecom shills like Ajit Pai at the FCC. We need experts who will listen to the public and defend our basic rights in the digital age.
