John,

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is the daughter of Black and South Asian immigrant parents. She's the first Black woman elected Vice President, the first Black woman to represent California in the U.S. Senate, and only the second Black woman ever to serve in the Senate.

Now, California Governor Gavin Newsom will appoint someone to represent California in the Senate for the remainder of Kamala's term.

We believe, in honor of her legacy, that he must appoint a powerful, progressive Black woman to replace Kamala Harris in the U.S. Senate.

California is a big state, and there are many Californian progressive women of color ready to take up the mantle and serve in the U.S. Senate. In fact, media reports indicate both Congresswoman Karen Bass and Congresswoman Barbara Lee are on the short list being considered for this appointment.

Kamala's mother often told her, "you will be the first to do many things, but make sure you are not the last."

In that spirit, California should continue Kamala Harris's legacy of progressive change-making — and send its second Black woman U.S. Senator to Washington in January.

Let's make sure Governor Newsom knows we're depending on him to deliver on the Vice President-elect's legacy. Add your name to call on Gov. Newsom to appoint a progressive Black woman to fill Kamala's seat in the Senate >>
