Supreme Court To Decide Life or Death for Hundreds of Millions of Americans Health Care

Today the highest court in the country will begin reviewing legal arguments to end the Affordable Care Act. A decision will not be made today, but will likely occur between March and June of 2021.

“What the Republican Congress could not do for over 10 years in overturning the Affordable Care Act legislatively, Republican attorneys general in Texas and other states are trying now to do before a Supreme Court packed with Trump appointees,” stressed Naomi Randolph from Action NC. 

Randolph continues, “This is a life or death situation for hundreds of millions of Americans who live with pre-existing conditions, and now for another 10 million who have been infected by Covid-19 -- a new pre-existing condition. Any decision that does not uphold the entirety of the law will mean health care chaos across the country.”

 A recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that a majority of Americans (58%) don’t want the Supreme Court to overturn the entire ACA.  

Specifically if the Republican Trump Supreme Court succeeds the following will happen:

• Over 21 million that get coverage from the law will lose their health care insurance;
• Another 135 million who get pre-existing conditions protections (cancer, asthma, diabetes, mental and physical disabilities to name just a few) will face loss of coverage due to their pre-existing condition, or will no longer be able to afford premiums to cover their conditions;
• The rising number of people impacted by COVID, which at this point continues to rage and infect over 100,000 people a day, will now have a pre-existing condition; and
• Hundreds of other public health benefits such as free colon and cancer screening, protections for tens of millions of seniors regarding prescription drug costs, and many other essential benefits will be lost.

“If the Republicans continue to hold the Senate, and the Supreme Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act, Congress probably won’t be able to agree on a replacement, just as we are seeing the Republican Senate refusing to pass a COVID economic relief package to help tens of millions of Americans and small businesses. The economic and human consequences of this would be dire and inhumane,” Randolph concluded.
