Rolling Up Our Sleeves: 350Brooklyn's Climate Action Organizing Meeting
Thursday, November 12, 7:30 pm
Election Day (week?) is behind us, but the climate crisis doesn't let up -- and neither do we. Help us map out where we're going in 2021. We'll share updates from all of our campaigns and committees, and we'll brainstorm about keeping it all moving forward. Learn how to join our fight against fossil-fueled peaker plants on the NYC waterfront; our campaigns for a Renewable Rikers Island and the NY Renews Climate and Community Investment Act; our advocacy for reducing single-use plastics and advancing the Green New Deal; our "Climate Wednesdays" series at Brooklyn Public Library; and raising our media profile.
The meeting will take place on Zoom. Advance registration is required.
Can You Call Senator Gillibrand on 11/16?
350Brooklyn is co-hosting a Call In Day targeting Senator Gillibrand on Monday, 11/16 in hopes of convincing her to co-sponsor the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. We'd love for you to join. Please log your call and view our suggested call script here.
City Action group: Electrify NYC School Buses
Launched last month, NYC's Clean School Bus Coalition aims to electrify the approximately 10,000 vehicles that make up the city's school bus fleet. Currently, the vast majority of school buses run on diesel, a fuel that harms the health of the children inside the buses while releasing nearly 3 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. 350Brooklyn and its coalition partners--including the NY Lawyers for the Public Interest, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, North Brooklyn Neighbors, and Earthjustice--will campaign to pass Int. 455, a city council bill still in draft form that would lay the groundwork for a cleaner fleet. Want to make it happen? Join 350Brooklyn's City Action group. We need everyone, including school administrators, public school parents and teachers, transportation workers, architects and planners, tech workers, engineers, and people with city government experience. To get involved, please sign up on this form and be sure to select the "Electric School Buses" campaign!
Progress Report: 350Brooklyn's Racial Inclusion and Equity Workshop
Since July, 350Brooklyn's Racial Inclusion & Equity Workshop has been working to answer the question, “How might we be more inclusive and prioritize the needs of Brooklyn’s BIPOC communities?” We've developed a questionnaire based on insights from our "Expert Interviews" with Karen Blondel, Jabari Brisport, Rhiana Gunn-Wright (one of the authors of the Green New Deal) and others. Now we're using this in-depth questionnaire to do "field work," interviewing BIPOC Brooklynites about their views on climate and experiences with environmental organizations. Once we've finished our interviews and analysis, we look forward to sharing some proposals with the larger 350Brooklyn community. Please feel free to reach out to Georgi at any time if you are familiar with Human Centered Design, have questions about the workshop, or would like to know more.
