AFSCME Family,
Today, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that could destroy the Affordable Care Act, ripping health care away from millions of Americans.
This is the moment Mitch McConnell and his corporate cronies have been waiting for: their chance to take away protections for people with preexisting conditions and end health coverage for millions — all during a pandemic.
There’s one way we can stop or reverse this plan to kill the Affordable Care Act: take back the U.S. Senate. And that is why we are focused like a laser on winning the two runoff elections in Georgia.
The consequences of losing the ACA would be devastating. Millions of Americans get their care through the marketplaces created by the law. Millions more, many of the most vulnerable Americans, will lose their coverage through Medicaid.
And insurance companies will no longer have to cover patients with preexisting conditions. They will be able to charge them much higher rates, offer them much worse coverage, or deny them insurance altogether.
Joe Biden promised to build on the success of the Affordable Care Act — and he won. Biden wants to cut prescription drug costs and expand coverage.
We need voices like Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the Senate. They’ll help President-elect Biden protect our coverage. We can win these races and flip control of the Senate — the momentum is on our side in Georgia. But only if we put our hearts into this race like we did into electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
We have accomplished so much, but there is much left to do. We need to fund the front lines so we can keep fighting this pandemic. We need to protect our right to join together and organize. We need to expand health care coverage and protect Social Security.
Electing Joe Biden was step one, but we aren’t done yet. Let’s keep working.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders
