The economic downturn from COVID-19 dramatically impacted Social Security’s finances and has accelerated the depletion of its trust funds. In this issue brief, Nicko Gladstone and Shai Akabas estimate how the retirement and disability trust funds would fare under several possible versions of the current recession.

The issue brief was summarized in a blog post, COVID-19 Has Made Social Security’s Financial Challenges Even More Imminent, and was featured in a discussion on the BPC Weekly Podcast.

With COVID-19 leaving the finances of many households in a rather perilous state, BPC and Yahoo Finance partnered to produce a four-part series of conversations focused on critical economic policy issues at stake in the 2020 election, including unemployment insurance and economic stimulus, tax policy, student loan debt, and retirement security.

Check out this recap of each segment and our policy recommendations that pave way for bipartisan action in the new Congress.

The nation’s economic recovery and the ability of Congress to govern a divided nation will hinge on the capacity to achieve meaningful bipartisan successes in the first six months of 2021.

During the week of December 7-11, BPC will host a Solutions Summit and roll out a Working Families’ Agenda focused on: 1) Promoting Financial Resilience and Wealth Creation; 2) Supporting Work and Expanding Opportunity; and 3) Helping Children and Families. The closing session will focus on racial inequity.
