PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

It has been a history-making weekend, and we hope you took time to connect with friends and loved ones in light of the news of a pro-Equality administration taking office in January. Now, here are more ways to connect in the coming week, including with legal experts, who will shed some light on tomorrow's Supreme Court activity on the Affordable Care Act.

Sleep and self-care

Support

Sleep is more critical than ever, especially for parents

While many are breathing a little easier as election results come in, stress and anxiety continue to be concern for many. One often overlooked self-care practice for parents? Sleep!

This beautiful piece from the NY Times about the importance of rest and sleep--and how the lack thereof have really taken a toll (especially on parents)--might be the motivation you need to prioritize getting the hours you need. Read it, then check out our Education section below on how to help advocate this critical self-care practice with others!

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for Self-Care (While You’re Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in, and times are tough, doesn’t mean you can't engage in some much-needed self-care. Here are your three steps:

  1. Learn: Read this article on the history of self-care and these 12 quotes from Audre Lorde so you can better understand and explain why taking care of our mental and physical health is an integral part of activism.
  2. Watch: Check out last week’s Something to Talk About Live with Brian K. Bond and Jean-Marie Navetta where they focused on post-election self-care . Also, check out this iconic video from Angela Davis on radical self-care, posted as a part of a video series by AfroPunk in 2018.
  3. Share: Use social media to share with friends and family what you’ve been doing to take care of yourself lately. Post a list of self-care activities, like this one from GirlBoss, to get the conversation started with groups you are a part of online.

#OurDayInCourt: ACA Virtual Town Hall

Tomorrow, Tuesday November 10th, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the most dangerous attack yet on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) since it was passed over ten years ago. This is the second attempt to overturn the ACA at the Supreme Court -- and with an expanded majority of conservative judges on the Court, this time they could win. We're proud to be part of the Organizing Committee producing a Virtual Town Hall, starting at 8pm ET/5pm PT, which will break everything down for you that happened. We’ll even send you the recording if you miss it!

RSVP at OurDayInCourt.org today to join us.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, November 12th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for another great live conversation. This week, we’ll be joined by Rev. Mark E. Fowler, Chief Executive Officer at the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, to talk about the article, "Queer & Christian in Texas: Are They Always Conflicting Identities?" by Stacy Fernández

You can watch the broadcast live on FacebookYouTube, or Twitter
