Back in 2014, when we gave Stacey Abrams our first-ever Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, we knew she'd have a phenomenal impact on our country's politics.

But even last year, when we gave Stacey the We Are EMILY Award (that's the highest award we give out!), we still didn't know just how influential she'd be in the 2020 election — even without her name on a single ballot.

During her We Are EMILY acceptance speech, Stacey spoke about her historic 2018 gubernatorial run against Republican Brian Kemp. Despite pervasive attempts by Republican leadership to suppress the vote, Stacey received almost two million votes in that election. She empowered young and minority voters and changed the face of Georgia politics forever.

"It worked," Stacey told the We Are EMILY crowd that night. "I may not be the governor, but that's a different conversation."

We got even more dramatic evidence of that work last week, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris overtook Donald Trump's lead in Georgia. As of today, it looks like the Democratic ticket will win the state. Georgia — a state in the Deep South — is turning blue.

Stacey, in partnership with dozens of organizations and other activists, changed the landscape of this election by registering hundreds of thousands of Georgia voters and organizing relentlessly to turn out the vote for Democrats.

We couldn't be prouder of Stacey and her incredible work. Back in 2014, we knew she would have an enormous impact on our country, and we've been honored to champion her ever since.
