I don't know about you, but I am relieved.

Our country has dodged a bullet. Our election system and democratic institutions have held up under immense stress, at least for the time being. We're not out of the woods yet, though. As I told the crowd at our Defend the Vote Rally last Wednesday night, this is no time for rest and relaxation.

I wrote in the introduction to my latest book Unscrewing America, "Sooner or later, we will ring in the year one A.T. After Trump, that is."

That time is upon us. Now the hard part starts.

The book's message, my message, is simple. Our country is in decline. To reverse that decline, we have to overcome at least four national emergencies. Bold steps are required, or our nation's decline will continue. America's major political parties are not thinking or acting boldly. One has been doing everything in its power to prevent the country from striking at the root of these emergencies. The other's alternative has been cautious incrementalism. That won't do. It's up to we the people to demand more, to insist on bold steps.

America can be unscrewed once we overhaul the thinking, the practices, and the systems that screwed us over in the first place.
