USA Today Network: “Asian Americans are the fastest-growing segment of eligible voters out of the major racial and ethnic groups in the United States, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Center.”
That’s 11 million Americans -- or 5% of all eligible voters. But this election cycle, too many Democrats ignored this. According to the executive director of APIAVote, their election season survey showed that “more than half of [AAPI] voters are reporting little or no contact from either major party.”
We saw record AAPI turnout, and surely Trump and the GOP’s blatant anti-Asian racism -- from calling our new vice president a “monster” to screaming about “the China virus” and blaming Asians for America’s 230,000+ deaths -- played a role. But there were still AAPI voters who did NOT show up to the polls, and it’s incalculable how many more Democratic seats we could have picked up if our party had reached out to them.
As Republicans pick up the pieces, we have no doubt that they themselves will look into courting our country’s fastest-growing racial group. We can’t let them win.
