Today is a great day, John.
I didn’t expect that the sound of horns honking could ever bring such joy and relief, or that a chyron on a TV screen could bring tears to my eyes. But I’m sure I’m not alone.
We know how important it is that Donald Trump be a one-term president -- not because of spite or partisanship, but because of what he represents and what he’s done with his power. He’s eagerly fostered hatred and governed with hostility toward science, our allies, and so many of the very principles America stands for.
It matters that a majority of the American people rejected him as our leader.
And it matters that Joe Biden is our president-elect. He’s a good man who cares deeply about people, no matter who you voted for. That’s how it should be. His career in public service has been driven by the idea that government can and should help people. And that starts by getting this pandemic under control and building the country back better than before.
Kamala Harris’ election matters a whole lot, too, for all the same reasons -- and because every little girl growing up in America now has a new definition of what’s possible. She’s the first Black, the first South Asian, and the first female ever elected Vice President -- and that’s a powerful thought.
Look, there will be a lot of tough days ahead. We face enormous challenges as a country. But today, I’m hopeful, and I’m so ready to go to Washington to roll up my sleeves and do the hard work -- and to do it alongside a Biden-Harris administration will be an honor.
Today, I hope you get to celebrate in your own way. Tomorrow, we get back to it.
