Friend,
We did it.
Today Senator Kamala Harris was elected as the first woman vice president in American history.
This is a moment all of us will remember for the rest of our lives. A woman of color, the proud daughter of immigrants, will lead her country from the White House. Young girls and women across America -- and especially Black women, who remain the backbone of the Democratic Party -- will now see themselves reflected at the highest level of government for the first time.
In so many ways this is an unprecedented victory -- but it is also part of the larger story of women in American politics; the next step on a very long path.
This community has been there every step of the way, and you are a part of this victory. We were proud to be with Kamala when she ran for attorney general in California and during her groundbreaking run for the U.S. Senate. And now, we are so proud that she has reached the White House.
Kamala joins a long legacy of EMILY's List women. From the "Year of the Woman" in 1992 to the sea change in 2018. From a heartbreaking 2016 election to the more than 60,000 women who have contacted us in its aftermath looking to run for office. From the first Democratic woman elected to the Senate in her own right to our first woman vice president.
Today is a day for celebration. A day for the history books. A day for every single EMILY's List woman, past, present, and future. Today is a day for all of us.
Thank you for being part of the EMILY's List family.
