John,
We did it! Today is the start of a new chapter in our democracy!
This truly historic day rests on the persistent action—and belief—that we can be better, through a more reflective democracy.
For the first time in our country's history, a woman will be serving in the White House, shattering that glass ceiling, and representing all immigrants and people of color, like her parents who came from India and Jamaica seeking freedom and opportunity. Kamala Harris' victory is not only historic, especially in the age of Trump's America, but an inspiration to people like us of all ages. Coupled with the wins of hundreds of down ballot New American candidates like Nida Allam in North Carolina, Zulma Lopez in Georgia, and Samba Baldeh in Wisconsin, people like us have broken the mold of what it looks like to run, win and lead.
After four long years of enduring Trump's white nationalist agenda, New American and BIPOC communities stepped up to own our political power and change the face of leadership. People like us turned out in record breaking numbers, electing New American candidates across the country.
Today's celebrations would not be possible without the support of people like you. Thank you for being a part of our movement and supporting the trailblazing candidates shaking up the status quo!
Let's take some time to truly appreciate the power of this moment and all the determination, sweat and tears that brought us these victories. In the coming months, the next phase of our work will begin. We'll start that conversation on Monday at 5pm ET [[link removed]] with some of the newly elected leaders to discuss our wins and opportunities to create change. Together, we are committed to holding the Biden-Harris administration and all elected officials accountable to their campaign promises and supporting their work to dismantle systems of oppression, ending the criminalization of our communities and expanding our rights.
But for today, I join you in celebrating the amazing victories of people like us and that for the first time, a woman, and a New American woman at that, will be serving in the White House. Thank you for making your voices heard, organizing our communities, and reclaiming our time and power to create a democracy that works for and represents all of us!
Onwards,
Sayu Bhojwani
