John,

Over the past several months, Lake Arbor has been a hot-button topic in the city of Charlotte. Tenants at the apartment complex off of Tuckaseegee Road have expressed concerns about their living conditions ranging from faulty wiring, pests and water damage. Even more, these tenants have been told they must vacate their homes. As we fight the housing crisis in our city, this is a major concern as Lake Arbor tenants need safe and affordable housing. And they need it now.

With Lake Arbor being privately owned, neither the City of Charlotte nor Mecklenburg County can take control of the apartment complex. Yet, we have a tenet to help those displaced and make sure that residents know they’ve not been forgotten about. This weekend, Charlotte City Council member Greg Phipps and I spent time at Lake Arbor hearing from residents first-hand. I want to thank Apryl Lewis for her vision of community collaboration. Together, we volunteered with organizations such as Fellowship Church, TORC, Samaritan’s Feet and CMPD who provided resources ranging from new shoes to helping residents find new housing. Additionally, the city and county contributed to emergency assistance fund that will be administered by United Way.

We’re on the right track, but the road to ensure the residents of Lake Arbor are done right is a long one. In my role as mayor, I’ll continue to work with our community to ensure that we not only take the steps needed to make sure that these Charlotteans find a safe place to call home, but that we’ll work to continue to build and renovate housing for people who are in need. It’s also one of the reasons that the $250 million in public-private funds to help solve our affordable housing crisis is so important. In short, we must continue to make sure Charlotte is affordable for all.

To be part of the work to help Lake Arbor residents, please visit the United Way of Central Carolinas.

Best,

Vi
