Hello John,

Thanks to everyone reading this email right now — and millions more across the country who refused to give up — we did it. We defeated Donald Trump and elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House.

We fought hard, battled some of the most egregious voter suppression to date, and made history with record-breaking numbers of voter turnout in any presidential election.

Not to mention, the first woman of color ever, Kamala Harris, will serve as our Vice President. I know without a doubt my friend and mentor, Shirley Chisholm, is smiling down on this momentous moment.

I am proud of all the work we did to defeat Trump’s hate-filled agenda. I am proud that this country went to bat for its values, its democracy, and its people. But the fight for the soul of this nation isn’t quite over yet.

Though we may have taken back the White House, the fate of the Senate is still unknown. And as we have seen these past few days, Trump will do whatever it takes to sabotage this election in favor of Republicans by filing baseless lawsuits and demanding recounts to delay the final election results.

But rest assured, the strength of our progressive movement is unmatched. And I am confident that no matter what Trump or Republicans try to do to undermine our democracy in these coming months, as long as we stand together — we will rise to the occasion and overcome it. Just like we did today.

This was no ordinary election. This was no ordinary year. But looking forward together, and with President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris leading the way, we will reverse the damage the Trump administration has done, face this pandemic with bold action, and rebuild our country until it is one that truly works for everyone.

Today I am proud. I am full of hope for a progressive future for generations to come. But most of all, I am grateful. Because this moment would not have been possible if it wasn’t for you.

Thank you.

In solidarity,

Barbara Lee
