John,

It has become clear that once all the votes are counted, Donald Trump will lose the 2020 presidential election, and his time in office will officially come to an end on January 20, 2021.

We can now say the words President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Joe Biden’s story is an American story, a story of loss, perseverance, determination, and human decency. His victory today shows that in America, those qualities still matter. That right still matters, truth still matters, and decency still matters.

Kamala Harris’ story is an American story, too. In electing the first woman Vice President, as well as the first person of color, Americans made a powerful statement that our nation is still a land of opportunity for all.

The four-year nightmare of Trump in the Oval Office is over, John, thanks to you.

Your votes, your volunteer efforts, your organizing, your support, your participation in peaceful protests and marches, your petition signatures, your phone calls. They all made a difference in our fight against the most dangerous president in modern U.S. history.

Make no mistake: this victory belongs to you, the people.

Now, more work lies ahead. To protect our health care and make it universal. To fight climate change. To invest in our economy and its people. To protect our democracy.

We will also have to deal with Trump’s temper tantrums during his lame duck session between now and January 20, 2021. Already, we’ve heard his dangerous claims of voter fraud, of Democrats “stealing” and “rigging” this election, of his refusal to concede. I have two words in response to this: sore loser.

Look, we knew Trump wouldn’t do the decent, right thing once voters rejected a second term for this disgraceful president. He spelled it out for us weeks in advance. And now, Trump continues to undermine the very foundation of our democracy.

But no matter what this sad, delusional man says, the American people made their voices heard, and they said “enough.”

Will Republican Congressional leaders finally do the same? At long last, will they put love of country before their loyalty to Trump? Will they show any devotion to our democracy?

But regardless of what they do or don’t do, let’s celebrate this victory. This victory for our country and our democracy. This victory for the people.

In this election, we saw the highest national voter turnout in a century, with President-elect Biden receiving more popular votes than any other presidential candidate in American history. All during a once-in-a-century pandemic. That’s incredible.

With Joe Biden as our President and Kamala Harris as our Vice President, we will once again be the force for freedom, prosperity, and democracy that the American people and the world need us to be.

Thank you once more for making this win possible, and for fighting alongside me from start to finish of this nightmarish presidency. It’s time to look ahead, keep moving forward, and build back better.

— Adam
