Indivisibles, we did it -- we beat Donald Trump!
We’ve been working towards this day for so long, and it’s honestly hard to
believe this moment has arrived. But it has. With more than 75 million
votes -- the most in history -- it’s clear that the people have chosen Joe
Biden. And now, as Pennsylvania's final ballots are counted, it’s clear he
has secured the electoral college and will be our next President.
It’s been a long couple of days. We always knew that election night would
feature a nerve-wracking red mirage. And while we ultimately beat Trump
resoundingly, we had some heartbreaking losses in the House, Senate, and
state legislatures. We fell short in places that hurt. We wanted the wave
to crash down everywhere, and it didn’t. That’s hard. The forces of white
supremacy and plutocracy have deep roots in our country, and it’s going to
take more than one election cycle to defeat them. But that’s why we commit
to being in it for the long haul. Because we know this fight for the
future of our country isn’t just about defeating Donald Trump -- it’s
about defeating the forces that allowed him to rise.
Four years ago, we wrote the Indivisible Guide in hopes of helping a
growing resistance to Donald Trump. Our message was simple: even in a
frightening and dangerous moment, when Trump and his minions controlled
every branch of the federal government, we still had power. We could use
our power to resist -- and ultimately, to win.
We could never have predicted what would come next: that millions of
people would bring together their neighbors, their friends, their
communities, to do just that. That we would become part of a grassroots
movement that would help save the Affordable Care Act, build a Blue Wave
in 2018, stand in fierce solidarity with communities under threat, and
ultimately, kick Donald Trump out of office.
We’ve traveled such a long road together. From the first Indivisible group
meetings in libraries, churches, and living rooms to the marathon GOTV
events this past weekend, Indivisibles have been a shining light at a dark
moment in our nation’s history. We led Indivisible groups, showed up at
town halls, went to protests, visited our local congressional offices, and
recruited family and friends to the cause. Together we enlisted, we
resisted, we persisted, and we insisted on a democracy. We joined a
powerful, resurgent progressive movement, fighting for ourselves and our
neighbors. And today, fellow travelers, our journey brought us here.
Together, we did it. Together, we won.
We wrote a Google Doc guide. You built it into a movement.
We've got a plan for the lame duck -- fighting for control of the Senate
and to influence the Biden transition -- and we'll have a plan for how to
move on from the Trump administration, no matter the outcome in Georgia.
Today is for celebration. Four years ago, this country elected a
disastrous, bigoted, would-be tyrant. And for the last four years,
Indivisibles in every corner of this country have been fighting with
everything they have to resist him and to build our progressive future.
Now we have the chance to chart a different course -- to realize a
democracy that is truly for all of us, where we all belong, and we all
care for each other.
Tomorrow we get back to work. Today we party.
In love, hope, and forever solidarity,
Ezra & Leah
