John,

From day one as your Lieutenant Governor, I've made it my mission as Chair of the PA Board of Pardons to take as many steps as possible to rework our broken criminal justice system.

Since then, we've eliminated all fees associated with applying for a pardon. Soon after, we appointed Brandon Flood to the role of Secretary for Board of Pardons — who himself has experienced incarceration and navigated the pardons process.

And on Friday, we oversaw a historic day concerning 23 — yes, 23! — clemency applications from people serving life in prison without parole, the most on a single day in more than 40 years.

Nine of those applications now go to Governor Wolf. Under my recommendation, three additional applications will be held under advisement and open to further clarification and deliberation. That's because the board must vote unanimously to approve commutation applications. (Yes, we want to change that too.)

I firmly believe that the pardons and commutations process is critical, as it is the only remedy in Pennsylvania for a second chance. And my mandate is to refine and remake it as a crucial part of criminal justice reform in our Commonwealth because Pennsylvania believes in second chances.

Thank you for being a part of this,

John
