John,

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: “Donald Trump’s premature claims of victory are illegitimate, dangerous, and authoritarian. Count the votes. Respect the results.”

After Donald Trump prematurely declared victory on election night, he and his team launched a blitz to stop vote counts, contest results, and determine which votes will count in a series of key states. According to The Washington Post, Trump’s army of lawyers have now filed lawsuits to initiate a recount in Wisconsin, where Joe Biden won by just around 20,000 votes, and his lawyers have sued to throw out mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania and Georgia.

We always knew that this nightmare scenario was a possibility, but what we weren’t expecting was for Trump to gather even more support than he did in 2016 -- especially not after the disastrous performance he’s had this year.

The truth is Democrats didn’t turn out as expected, and now too many races across the country are too close to call. In Florida, a federal judge found that the U.S. Postal Service failed to make sure left-behind mail-in ballots were counted, citing that as many as 16,000 votes could have been left behind. Freshman Democratic Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell lost her seat in the House by less than 12,000 votes.

We know that many Democratic candidates like Mucarsel-Powell won’t have the resources they need to combat Trump and the GOP’s voter suppression efforts -- and Trump might just succeed in using the courts to steal another four years in power.

John, we can’t let that happen. We’ve worked too hard to let the GOP sabotage our democracy. But after channeling all of our resources into turning out voters in tight races, we simply don’t have the funds we need to provide widescale support to our candidates when they need us most.
