This pandemic has brought hardships upon every person in this country. Ever since mid-March, 50 million people lost their jobs, 30 million went hungry and 12 million lost their employer-provided health insurance. And, ever since mid-March, 650 billionaires have seen their wealth increase by $845 billion!1
This vast expansion of wealth inequality should not be happening. Our system needs to be drastically reformed so it works for everyone.
Just recently, the American people learned how little President Donald Trump, an elitist ultra-wealthy billionaire, paid in taxes. The tactics exploited by him, so that he only paid $750 for taxes in 2016 and 2017, proves that our tax code can be easily manipulated with special breaks reserved for the rich and made unavailable to ordinary citizens like us.
What’s the solution to this problem? A wealth tax that would annually tax the net worth of the billionaires and multi-millionaires. One version of this solution would assess a 3% tax on wealth between $50 million and $1 billion, and a 6% tax on wealth above $1 billion. America and our dwindling economy could reap up to $2 trillion while only the richest 0.1% would be subjected to this wealth tax.
