John,

This election season has been one for the books, but the outcome is one we’ve been anticipating. The path to victory is clear and Joe Biden will be our next president(1) and we still maintain the Democratic majority in the House.

As a lifelong fighter for people and our planet, I am deeply relieved and encouraged by President-elect Biden’s victory. Trump’s administration represented an unprecedented threat to public health, climate stability and a livable future on Earth — not to mention a grave threat to our democracy.

But we never gave up these past four years. We never wavered. You joined us to protect our environment, communities, human rights and democracy — everything this past administration tried to threaten and destroy.

Food & Water Action has been anticipating and planning for this outcome for many months. While we are celebrating this opportunity to move our mission forward and electing more strong progressives to the House, we’re left to undo many of the policies Trump and his administration leave behind. We must address the climate crisis. This must be a top priority for President-elect Biden's administration and Congress.

Our mission hasn’t changed. Safe food, clean water and a livable environment — these are our goals, regardless of who or what stands in our way. And we’re ready to get started immediately under a new administration. There’s no time to waste. Will you join us?

While the fate of the Senate is still up in the air — along with several state and local race outcomes — we are able to celebrate the election of numerous Food & Water Action champions, such as Mondaire Jones (NY-17), Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), and Senator Ed Markey (MA), who will take on the fossil fuel and factory farm industries. We also scored substantial victories at the local level to keep fracking wells away from homes and schools, and transition counties to 100 percent renewable energy.

For the first time in years we’ll finally have a better chance at the federal level to advance real protections for our food, water and climate. We know that if we continue to work together we CAN protect our communities and planet from catastrophic climate change.

But the work to stop catastrophic climate change must start now. It’s imperative we raise our voices and stand together to immediately push President-elect Biden and his administration to tackle this issue in a real, meaningful way. President-elect Biden has enormous power to set policy through executive action, and we will make sure during his first 100 days to advocate for immediate action on:

Banning fracking and stopping new fossil fuel extraction on public lands;
Declaring a national climate emergency under the National Emergencies Act;
Demanding that administration appointees have zero ties to Big Oil & Gas;
Ordering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to halt water shutoffs during the pandemic; and
Eliminating bad regulatory rollbacks such as clean water protections and the National Environmental Policy Act.

At the same time, we will also double down on our successful state-based strategy to block fossil fuel projects and lay the groundwork for Congressional gains in 2022. We will focus our efforts on strategies to win meaningful improvements in people's lives at the federal, state and local levels, and push Congressional leadership to aggressively stand up for our food, water and climate.

We’re ready to move forward in 2021 and the next four years, and I hope you will join us. It’s clear that if we work together we can make meaningful changes for our communities and planet, and we’ll continue to have victories at every level of government to ban fracking, ban factory farms and secure clean, affordable water for all.
Donate to Food & Water Action today to continue the fight for clean food, safe water and a livable planet.
