United States: Leaders Must Put Democracy above Partisan Interests

Washington - November 6, 2020 — “This has been an election like no other. But in the end, the American people have broken turnout records across the country and shown once again the resilience of our system for electing leaders,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House. “At this crucial historical moment, all people of good will, especially elected officials, must stand up for our democracy rather than partisan interests and honor the will of the voters. To do less would be to debase the United States and place it in the company of authoritarians and rogue regimes.”

“All politicians and media outlets have a civic duty to refrain from wild allegations or incitement to violence,” Abramowitz continued. “President Trump’s repeated claims of widespread fraud are grossly irresponsible and have yet to be supported by any facts. It is time for American public figures to defend the electoral process, to reject outlandish conspiracy theories, and to support the counting of every valid vote.”

“We applaud the election workers and administrators all over the country who continue to ensure that voting rights are upheld. Given the likely narrow margin of victory, legal challenges are to be expected. These can and will be addressed appropriately by our independent judicial institutions. Americans should continue to show patience with the process, which has been complicated by the coronavirus pandemic and the refusal of some state officials to take appropriate steps to enable speedier counting of results.”

“Americans and their leaders must remember that the world is watching, and that what happens here has an enormous impact. People everywhere expect the United States to set a strong democratic example, and we must not let them down.”
