MassGOP Chairman Lyons on 2020 presidential election: "Let the process play itself out" Nov. 6, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Evan Lips, communications director 617-523-5005 ext. 245 WOBURN -- Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons on Friday called on Republicans to "let the process play itself out," referencing the painstaking duty to recount votes in several key states, and turn to the courts if necessary. "If the margins of votes in several states weren't this slim, then there wouldn't be very much to talk about," Lyons said. "The only conclusion we can safely make at this point is that all the pundits, prognosticators, and pollsters who claimed this election would be a landslide victory for Democrats were completely wrong." Lyons pointed out that presidential election challenges are not unheard of and cited the Florida ballot recount that occurred in 2000 where an official winner was not named until mid-December. The process in 2020, Lyons said, should again involve officials in contested states carefully counting all votes, with observers representing both parties present. "I think we can all agree that preserving our faith in the system should be the top priority here," Lyons said. "Calling for recounts and weighing potential court challenges is all part of the electoral process. "We should all remain calm and patiently allow the process to play itself out, and if that includes court challenges similar to what took place 20 years ago, then so be it."
