Dear John — Many of you are receiving this email because at some point over the last decade you embraced and signed your name to the It Gets Better pledge: “I believe in a world where hope outshines fear. I commit to stand up and speak out against hate and intolerance. My support for LGBTQ+ youth will be steadfast. I am part of a global community that is proud and resolute in its efforts to create a brighter, more inclusive world for all people. I know it will get better." The spirit of that pledge does not change based on the composition of our elected officials. It is a promise to fight for LGBTQ+ youth no matter the circumstances. Helping kids love who they are transcends the intolerant narratives that sow division and treat marginalized people as less than human. We have heard a lot of this toxic rhetoric lately — from people who are supposed to have our best interests at heart. It angers us to no end, but we choose to focus that energy on pushing our work forward. The It Gets Better Project has never sugar coated reality. We know the world can be a difficult and challenging place for LGBTQ+ young people. We also know that there are incredible, self-actualized people like you doing everything in their power to make the world a better place for them. Here are a few ways you can channel that power for good:
We have said it before — the path to progress is not linear, but positive change comes when we stand together and demand it. Our community has proven this time and time again. We will continue to shine a light on the joy each and every one of us deserves until we live in a world where all LGBTQ+ youth are free to live equally and know their worthiness and power as individuals. We’re in this together, always. Stay loud and proud!
