Who’s in charge here? That’s the question every Los Angeles resident should be asking right now. Murders are up. Shootings are up. Gang murders are up. Gun confiscations are down. Attacks on officers are up. Really, who is in charge of the LAPD.
The answer, of course, is the Police Commission. It’s not commonly known, but per the City Charter, the Police Commission is in charge of the Los Angeles Police Department. Not the Chief (he’s the administrator of the Department). Not the Mayor and not the City Council. It’s the 5-civilian political appointees that sit on the Police Commission.
So with crime exploding and with political meddling hampering our officers’ ability to do their job, what is the Police Commission doing about it. We have a very simple question: Where is their plan to keep LA safe?
