A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
This week the Chamber will honor our Northville Military Veterans through the banner program, which pictures our vets on several light poles around downtown. Accordingly and with great respect, I will look back on those who have served our community and our country. We have 24 Civil War veterans in the Oakwood Cemetery alone (Cady St. Cemetery), who were highlighted on the Cemetery Tour during the Heritage/Victorian days. Additionally, we have hundreds of Veterans from WWI, WWII through the Vietnam War and beyond at our Rural Hill resting place.
During my childhood, Armistice Day (which was changed to Veterans Day by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954), was a big deal, representing the day of November 11, 1918, which was when fighting ended for the Great War (WWI). It was also, very notably, the day my mother was born. In fact, the original Detroit Free Press front page was framed on our wall, with the headline of “Truce Ends War” on the 11-month, 11th day & 11th hour. Before we take a historical look at Armistice Day and Veterans Day activities in the community, I wanted to cover the LATEST NEWS …
* First, I want to thank each of you for assisting our community in having a safe and enjoyable Halloween celebration in town. It was a beautiful Saturday night with a tremendous Full Moon.
* As we transition from Halloween through the elections, l encourage us all to come together Locally, Regionally & Nationally working towards “Good Government” … Let’s all make a difference and be involved moving forward.
* It is being described as “Covid Pandemic Fatigue” in this country. But remember, the Pandemic isn’t tired of us… keep your guard up as we go into the Holidays – Mask Up, Wash Up and keep your Social Distance!
* Due to the pandemic, the US/Canada border will continue to remain closed until at least 11/21.
* AstraZeneca reported that its potential COVID-19 vaccine has produced similar immune responses in older & younger adults. In a previous statement AstraZeneca announced, “The vaccine would likely provide protection against contracting the coronavirus for about a year.” For more detailed info go to the CNBC website.
* U.S. Health officials are urging Americans to get their flu shots this year in hopes of thwarting a “twindemic” situation, in which both influenza and COVID-19 could spread & sicken the public. Another reason for getting the flu shot is that it may reduce your risk of COVID-19. Research indicates that a flu vaccine against the influenza virus may also trigger the body to produce broad infection fighting molecules that combat the pandemic-causing coronavirus (info provided by Scientific American).
* Coronavirus restrictions will need to remain in place in some form even after a vaccine becomes available, Dr. Anthony Fauci said in a recent podcast. Fauci explained that “health officials will likely get knowledge of whether or not we have safe and effective vaccines some time in December.” – Fox News Rundown
* Lansing Update: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Thursday announced the following:
+ Michigan restaurants are required to begin tracking the names & numbers of their customers (for contact tracking) starting 11/2, and Indoor venues are restricted to 50, with 6 per Table .
+ The legislatures in a bipartisan fashion will work with the Governor’s office to revise COVID-19 policies going forward, as our state continues to face Pandemic challenges… Keep your guard up!
* COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES: Northville has had 65 cases/7 fatalities, Township 517/29, Michigan 204K/7.8K, Nation 9.5M/236K. Global 47M/1.2M.
* Congrats to the STANGS. The Northville Mustangs won their first-round Football Playoff game vs. Salem Friday at home, 37-14. Their next opponent will be Belleville on 11/6.
Now, let’s look at Northville Armistice Day / Veterans Day events through the years:
* First, I wanted to clarify something from last week’s letter when I mentioned the Lloyd H. Green Post. The Lloyd H. Green Post is not part of the VFW but rather, the American Legion. For more info, please read a very informative article in The Ville by Michele Fecht, “American Legion post celebrates 100 years”:

* If not for COVID, this would have been a banner year for Northville's American Legion, celebrating its 100th anniversary. We congratulate them for all they have done for our community. Personally, I will always be thankful for their sponsorship of “Boys State” in 1978, and that experience is yet another reason I am honored to serve as your Mayor today.
* The Northville Record had a history of featuring veterans in its paper when they enlisted, served, and returned. Some notable ones were, of course, Lloyd H. Green, Mary Lapham, and others.
* As I eluded to earlier, the banner program by the Chamber is an outstanding remembrance of those who served proudly to defend our freedoms. The banners are on display for the entire month of November and also during the month of May. If you did not see the virtual Cemetery Walk this year, a partnership effort of the Northville Historical Society and the Library, there is a nice section on our local veterans – see link below:

* The VFW Post sponsors the annual Memorial Day parade and maintains the Veterans portion of the Rural Hill Cemetery which includes placing flags on all our fallen heroes’ gravesites each year. It is truly Northville’s Arlington-like cemetery area.
During this month, please slow down and thank those in uniform as well as family & friends that have served to keep the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Keep that Northville Faith!
Brian Turnbull
