WOBURN -- Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons on Thursday offered his praise on Thursday to Republican candidates statewide -- both the winners and those who came up short -- and promised that the state party will "continue to play offense" as it looks ahead to the 2022 midterm elections.

"We took our best shots, the party adopted an aggressive approach, and I couldn't be prouder of the efforts made by our slate of candidates, especially for so many in which this was their first time seeking public office," Lyons said.

One of those first-timers was Republican Kelly Pease of Westfield, who managed to flip a House seat previously held by Democrats. Overall, only one House Republican incumbent came up short, putting the number of House seats held by Republicans at 31.

Lyons pointed out that in 2009, the number stood at 15.

"We're going to continue to play offense and are going to continue to force the Democrats to defend their unpopular positions," Lyons said. "It's telling to me when Beacon Hill Democratic leadership postpones much of their legislative agenda until after the election."

Lyons cited pending legislation such as efforts to weaken law enforcement and repeal state laws ensuring medical care to infants born alive following a failed abortion attempt.

"The Democrats are hoping people will tune out and forget the fact that they're actively working to enact some very unpopular far-left legislation," Lyons said. "The Massachusetts Republican Party is paying close attention, and will make sure to remind voters every chance we get."
