We expose China’s pangolin trade deception

Four months ago, Chinese State media claimed pangolin scales had been removed from traditional medicines – but it’s still business as usual. Our report Smoke and Mirrors identified 221 companies licenced to sell pangolin scale products and 64 products listing pangolin as an ingredient advertised on manufacturer websites, six available via e-commerce sites. The Government claims pangolin scales used in medicines come from a national stockpile, but it’s shrouded in secrecy and never seems to run out.

Wildlife law changes a missed opportunity?

Despite intense global scrutiny since the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, China’s revision of its Wildlife Protection Law looks set to be a major disappointment and failure of nerve as it continues to allow domestic trade in endangered species.
