ISRA Thursday Bulletin - November 5, 2020

Executive Directors Message

Richard Pearson

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reports over 3.3 million background checks were performed in the month of October. While many of those were for new or renewal Concealed Carry Licenses, the NSSF estimated about 1,100,000 background checks were for firearm purchases. The number of new gun owners in the United States is estimated to be around 6.9 million.
To get a perspective on how many people, that is the states of Indiana and Tennessee which have about 6.9 million citizens each. Let’s hope this trend continues. At the risk of making everyone sick, the next Election is only two years away.

As I write thIs Thursday Bulletin, the Presidential Election has not been decided. Whatever the outcome, gun owners and gun owner’s organizations should look back and see what they could have done more effectively. The problem this year is that anti-gun candidates and organizations had literally unlimited funding. Michael Bloomberg dumped 100 million dollars into Florida just to defeat Donald
Trump. It is true Donald Trump won Florida but it caused the Trump Campaign to tie up money that could have been used elsewhere such as Wisconsin or Arizona.

Pro-gun organizations need to have more money in their coffers from here on out. The financial problems the National Rifle Association had wounded them. Of course, that was the plan of the anti-gunners all along. The NRA was founded in New York State In 1871 and had been domiciled there without much difficulty. New York Governor Cuomo was willing to use his administration’s power to tear
apart the NRA and did. The NRA did everything they could but it was severely handicapped. It will be awhile before the NRA can rebuild itself.

Other national gun owner organizations like the Second Amendment Foundation, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Gun Owners of America, and others stepped forward but could not make up the difference. Every gun owner needs to reach down in their pockets and cough up a little more to be ready for next time.

The Illinois State Rifle Association will be back in Springfield for the first Veto Session which begins on Tuesday, November 17 and ends on November 19. I don’t expect much to happen but we will be there in force. Mark Twain said (or some attribute this to Gideon J. Tucker) “No man’s life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session.” I’m sure he was
talking about the Illinois General Assembly.

There is a Second Veto Session scheduled for December 1, 2, and 3, but it would not surprise me if it is cancelled. We usually get the Spring Session calendar during Veto Session. The Spring Session normally starts the second Wednesday of January; this year that is January 13. Normally has gotten to be a big word this year. We will keep you informed.

Tidbits

November 5, 1941 - The Combined Japanese Imperial Fleet is given orders to Attack Pearl Harbor.

November 6, 1860 - Abraham Lincoln becomes the 16th President of the United States. By the time he was inaugurated on March 4, 1861, the Confederate States of America had been formed and the path to war was set.

November 6, 1906 - President Theodore Roosevelt travels to Panama, making him the first President to travel outside the United States on a diplomatic tour.

November 10, 1775 - The United States Marine Corps is born. The Continental Congress passes a resolution to raise two battalions of Marines. Their first action on a hostile shore came in March 1776, when Captain Samuel Nichols and his Marines captured New Providence Island in the Bahamas from the British. To date, the United States Marines have executed more than 300 landings on hostile shores.
Happy Birthday Marines!

November 11, 1918 - Armistice Day, fighting in WWI ends. The result was the Treaty of Versailles which was so punitive it actually caused WWII. At the beginning of WWI there were 36 Monarchies in Europe. By the end of WWI there was only one that survived, the British Monarchy. The United States found itself in the role of a world leader. The world had changed forever and we are still living
with the consequences of WWI.

November 11 is Veterans Day. Thank you Veterans!
