Dear John,
As animal advocates, we often have mixed feelings about the holiday season. On the one hand, we enjoy coming together and celebrating with loved ones. On the other, we’re reminded of all the animals killed for holiday dinners.
For Thanksgiving, most of these animals are turkeys, the 45 million who spend their short, brutal lives crowded in filthy sheds. Many of us have been able to visit a sanctuary and see some of the lucky few who have escaped this cruel fate. And watching these smart, sensitive birds forage, socialize, and play, we wish other people would see them as the fascinating animals they are.
Our goal as advocates is to show them and pave the way to a better, kinder food system and a more compassionate world.
This may seem a daunting task, but with your support, we’ve made incredible progress. Mercy For Animals’ investigations this year—in three countries—have exposed the problems of factory farming to more people than ever. Our Plants to the People program has not only helped folks in need but introduced more people to plant-based eating. And our Transfarmation Project is giving factory farmers a way out.
The tide truly is changing, John.
