** LEAF's Gains in Equality
------------------------------------------------------------
As we wrap up summer, we celebrate setting new precedents in law at both the national and international level!

--> In the cases of Sears and St Germaine, our involvement set an international precedent in recognizing misogyny in hate speech.

--> In the case of Ryan Jarvis at the Supreme Court level, our involvement resulted in the recognition of voyeurism as a violation of sexual integrity, which sets a precedent in future cases which address the use of tech in violence against women.
We celebrate those gains, and share updates on our substantive equality efforts in our Bulletin and introduce you to our new staff members.
Plus, we cordially invite you to our 2019 Persons Day Gala!

** Conviction for Misogyny in Hate Speech
------------------------------------------------------------
We applaud an Ontario court sentencing in the cases of Sears and St Germaine. This is the first conviction for hate speech against women, recognizing the harm of promoting misogynistic views and beleifs.

** Recognition of Sexual Offence of Voyeurism
------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan Jarvis was recently sentenced by the trial judge after the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) convicted him of voyeurism. The SCC has recognized voyeurism is a violation of sexual integrity. This will act as a critical precedent in future cases, as tech enables new forms of violence against women to emerge.

------------------------------------------------------------
Sex discrimination has been removed from the Indian Act. Up to 450,000 Indigenous women and their descendants are now legally entitled to registration. This is a victory that took fifty years of legal and political struggle to achieve, and we congratulate Indigenous women on their win.

Gabby Aquino (left), Emily Dutton (middle), and Paniz Khosroshahy
Our Summer Legal Interns go back to Law School in the Fall! Gabby Aquino and Emily Dutton worked on our Strategic Litigation Project by researching cases, conducting literature reviews, and consulting with past and future partner organizations. Paniz Khosroshahy researched and drafted memos and reports on access to justice in our Due Justice Project and for our Cybermisogyny project on image-based sexual violence. We are sad to see this fantastic group of Lawyers-in-the-making go, but we are grateful for their great work and welcome them to our community as life long LEAFers.
