Friends -- It’s official. I am honored to have been re-elected to serve as the Congresswoman from Alabama’s 7th Congressional District!
Every door knocked, phone call made, text sent, and dollar chipped in made an enormous impact on our ability to turn out a historic number of voters in Alabama. I am so proud to fight alongside this grassroots coalition that is standing up for progress in our community.
Today, we rest and celebrate -- but tomorrow we must get right back to work.
When I look at everything happening in our country right now, the future generations of America are heavy on my mind. As we have seen throughout our history, each generation is faced with picking up where the last left off and continuing the fight for progress.
I am inspired by the young voters who answered the call to fight for change in our country by showing up in record numbers to the polls this year. They sent an unwavering message that our country is headed in the wrong direction under President Trump, and they demanded an end to police brutality, voter suppression, family separation, pollution, and corporate greed.
Young Americans who aren’t old enough to vote are watching us, learning from us, and counting on us, too.
They’re watching how we react to the divisiveness, inequality, and injustice in our country right now. They’re learning from the leaders we elect to our highest levels of government. They’re counting on us to create a country where they can thrive and an environment free from the impacts of climate change.
Young people are the future and they believe in their power to make a difference. It’s on us to stand up for them and with them during this continued fight to make our country a place where everyone has a fair shot.
For them, I will continue fighting for a stronger future where access to health care is a right, not a privilege. I will continue to fight for a more equitable public education system that gives every student an opportunity to succeed and teacher pay that is commensurate with the seriousness of their profession. I will continue to fight for more affordable higher education, good-paying job opportunities, and vocational training.
Finally, I want to say thank you for your support during this campaign and for the opportunity to serve another term representing Alabama in Congress. Thank you for your dedication to our community, our state, and the future of this country.
I look forward to continuing the Necessary, Good Trouble it will take to fight for progress alongside this incredible team.
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Terri Sewell
