Last night, Trump told the nation that he won the presidential election.
Just because Trump declares victory doesn’t make it true. In fact, Slate reports that “[Trump’s] strategy is not going to work. The networks and news organizations are prepared for this, and Americans have learned to discount anything the president says. Most are inoculated against his lies about voting. And assuming there are no major foul-ups in how the rest of Election Day voting goes, it is hard to imagine any legal strategy that will lead courts to order a halt to the counting of ballots that have arrived before Election Day.”
But in an election this complicated, there could very well be some “foul-ups” in the voting or the counting process. And even if there are none, Republicans are sure to lie and say there were. And we know that, even though many of us tune Trump out, millions of Americans take what he says as gospel -- meaning all of the president’s loyalists will be convinced he’s been re-elected.
We’re going to hit this failed president with a flood of ballots in order to drive him out. But it now looks like that may not be enough. We also need a flood of supporters to speak up, insist their votes are valid, and refuse to let Trump keep living in the house we’re paying for when he loses fair and square.
