I am so proud of the Blue Team and thankful to all of the candidates who ran this cycle, all of the volunteers, activists, county and local leaders, campaign and party staff, and all the elected Colorado leaders who care about building a team. A team who is committed to doing right by the people of Colorado. You worked so hard that people in the future will mistake Colorado as blue. We are a purple state that runs better candidates that are better aligned on the issues and we have shown that when we work together we can move mountains.
I never really thought about being “Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party” until Trump won in 2016, and we were facing a GOP Congress and Judiciary. While not glorious, I decided the number one thing I could do to make a difference systemically in 2017 was to dedicate ALL my time and effort strengthen and improve the Democratic Party and focus on building a leadership pipeline of candidates who can enact good policies for our state.
We now have a Democratic Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Treasurer, CU Board of Regents, State Board of Education, Colorado Senate and Colorado House! We flipped CD 6 and have been focusing on and winning down ballot races like County Commissioner, District Attorney, city council and school board races.
It was not that long ago when Colorado was a red state.
Last night you came through for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and John Hickenlooper in a BIG way. This has been a hard four years on all of us, where every hour of every day under Donald Trump has been a moral injury to our nation and to each of us personally. It is hard to “wait”, but wait we will until every vote is counted and keep faith that these votes in the end will be for decency over corruption.
We share a sense of loss that we were not able to elect Diane Mitsch Bush in the 3rd Congressional District. I know how hard we worked to flip that seat and we share a sense of dismay for the fact that someone so poorly equipped to represent CD3 is now a sitting member of Congress. There are no words to describe this outcome.
We should be proud that we passed B (Gallagher Repeal), defeated 115 (Abortion Ban), and passed 113 (national popular vote) and 118 (paid family leave). We should be concerned that Colorado passed 76 removing the guarantee of every citizen’s right to vote and eliminating the recent right of 17 years to vote in primaries if they turn 18 by election day. Likewise, the passage of 116 and 117 will further damage our economy already hamstrung by TABOR and facing a recession.
And as the votes continue to be counted, you should feel good about what you accomplished. Rest, hope, and dream on how we are going to help our elected officials pass the policies that will make a better future for all of us.
Please rest, heal, and know you have already made the world a better place.
