Dear Friends,

What an election! The nation just experienced record voter turnout, despite decades of voter suppression aimed at formerly incarcerated Americans, disabled voters, voters of color, and even seniors and students. We also witnessed first-hand the deep divisions which endure in this country based on differences of race, economic status, education, gender, and geography. Taken together, bridging these divides is the agenda for the future of this country and our democracy.

But for now, we have an even more urgent task. It is critical that faith leaders and community advocates publicly urge our fellow Americans to support the rule of law and pre-established election processes, state by state, and to ensure that every vote is fairly and faithfully counted no matter how long it takes.

Prior to this election, I joined 31 faith leaders of the Washington D.C. policy offices of national religious denominations and faith networks to issue a statement calling for integrity, safety, and fairness in the 2020 election. In it, we stated that "All votes must be counted in a fair and transparent manner," and that "The decision of the majority must be upheld with a peaceful transition."

The full statement, as well as social media graphics for various messaging scenarios we may encounter in the coming days and weeks, can be found in our 2020 Post-Election Toolkit. We have heard from many sources that the religious community will be trusted messengers as the outcome of this election is fought over and eventually decided. We hope you will join us in this sacred work!

In hope and faith,

Rev. Ron Stief
Executive Director
