Democracy Is Worth The Wait |
Hey Friend - I wanted to reach out to you with some encouragement. You've been here for us during the elections and we're here for you now! Both Maria-Teresa and I have observed the vote counting here in Clark County on multiple occasions. I can tell you it's a transparent process that Joe Gloria, Clark County Registrar of Voters, has in place. Not only have our election officials been incredibly detailed in the planning process, but the logistics and strict adherence to procedures is absolutely in place with the people processing ballots. Currently there are still thousands of votes, even in Nevada, that are actively being counted. In the Battle Born State, we have extremely dedicated poll workers and election officials, like Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, who are working to carefully count every vote cast in this election. Voter turn-out was amazing! I believe this is due to Nevada expanding access to voting. After the passage of Question 5, for automatic voter registration in 2018, our state followed that up with bills in the 2019 legislative session to create same-day voter registration and restore voting rights for formerly incarcerated Nevadans. This year, after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the legislature passed AB 4, a bill to allow for mail-in voting in the general election. We’ve done these things, as a state, because we believe in The Nevada Way: That every single vote counts. This isn’t a partisan idea. In 1998, the Republican Nevada Secretary of State, Dean Heller (Yes, THAT Dean Heller), made sure every last vote was counted in a very tight Senate race between Democratic Senator Harry Reid and Republican challenger, John Ensign. Reid prevailed by less than 500 votes. And Heller honored the will of people and certified the results. So in 2020, we’re staying calm and trusting in our County Registrars and Secretary of State to count every vote. We know how much is at stake in our communities in this election. That is why we can’t let anyone’s voice go uncounted. Ignore the polls, the pundits, and those who want to convince you it’s over before it's over, no matter what side they are coming from. It’s only over when every vote is counted. So stay with us as we await the final official results! Democracy is worth the wait. In solidarity, Annette |
