Now, we wait.

This year's election was one for the books. Americans across race, place of origin, and zip code turned out in record numbers to come together with and for each other. Even amid a global pandemic and in the face of deliberate barriers like day-long lines and attempts to eliminate drop-off locations, we did our job.

And now our election officials are doing theirs, as they have in every previous election.

Election officials worked throughout the country yesterday to put on a free and fair election, and they continued late into the night to verify and count every ballot. Despite efforts to change laws in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, local election officials weren't able to start early counting in those states. It is going to take longer to count these votes and verify a winner -- and that's okay.

Americans should have faith in the voting process. We have a constitutional right to have our lawfully cast ballots counted. That is a cornerstone of American democracy. If anything, let's take this moment to celebrate this year's historic turnout and extraordinary participation. Our democracy works best when everyone has a say... and the last few weeks have shown us that we belong to a vibrant, resilient democracy.

Your role in this wasn't small. Thank you for everything you did leading up to this week. For making your voice heard, for getting the vote out, for spreading awareness when it mattered -- and, above all, for delivering our democracy.

And don't forget: Far beyond these elections and their outcomes, we'll continue to fight relentlessly for every single person in our nation to be afforded the civil and human rights they deserve.
